Social bookmarking is a web-based book marking of favorite web sites, videos, articles, etc. It allows for users to access bookmarks from any computer to share with others.

The overriding benefit of social bookmarking is having your web site(s) or content bookmarked in a way that feeds the “popularity” ranking and increases your search engine ranking position. Some of the most popular social bookmarking web sites are Digg, Reddit, Delicious and StumbleUpon.

What is Digg?
Digg is a social news web site made for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the Internet. This is done by submitting links and stories and voting and commenting on submitted links and stories. Voting stories up and down is the site’s cornerstone function, respectively called digging and burying.

Many stories are submitted to Digg every day, but only the most Dugg stories appear on the front page of the site.

What is Reddit?

Reddit is a social news web site on which users can post links to content on the Internet. Other users may then vote the posted links up or down, causing them to become more or less prominent on the Reddit home page.

What is Delicious?

Delicious is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing and discovering web bookmarks. It allows users to tag, save, manage and share web pages from a centralized source. With emphasis on the power of the community, Delicious greatly improves how people discover, remember and share on the Internet.

What is StumbleUpon?

StumbleUpon is an Internet community that allows its users to discover and rate web pages, photos and videos. It is a personalized Recommendation Engine that uses peer and social networking principles.

Web pages are presented when the user clicks the “Stumble!” button on the site’s toolbar. StumbleUpon chooses which web pages to display based on the user’s ratings on previous pages, ratings by his or her friends and by the ratings of users with similar interests.

Photo sharing is the publishing or transfer of a user’s digital photos online, thus enabling the user to share them with others (whether publicly or privately). This functionality is provided through web sites that facilitate the upload and display of images. One of the most popular photo sharing web sites is Flickr.

Flickr is an image and video hosting web site and online community platform. In addition to being a popular web site for users to share personal photographs, the service is widely used by bloggers as a photo repository.
