AOL Inc plans to find a buyer for its social networking site Bebo, for which it paid $850 million in 2008, or shut it down.

The level of competition in social networking makes it difficult for the company to fight larger players such as Facebook and News Corp’s MySpace, AOL said.

The company plans to decide whether to close Bebo or sell it by the end of May, it told staff on Tuesday.

“Bebo, unfortunately, is a business that has been declining and, as a result, would require significant investment in order to compete in the competitive social networking space,” the company said in a memo sent to staff.

AOL, which was spun off from Time Warner Inc in December, said it is not in a position to “further fund and support Bebo in pursuing a turnaround in social networking.”

The company said it is committed to finding interested potential buyers for Bebo. Bebo has about 40 employees, mostly in the United States.

Bebo, founded in San Francisco, is one of the most popular social networking sites in the UK, but never gained traction in the United States.

I was at a seminar this last week and the conversation turned to how human resource departments are using Facebook and Twitter to see what type of person you are before they decide to hire you.

One professor from a local university spoke up to say that the majority of students who went to the university believed and utilized Facebook on a purely social level and felt that LinkedIn was their ‘professional’ social media website.

Man, do they have an awakening coming once they get into the workforce! I find it fascinating how different clients and associates use both LinkedIn and Facebook. So many of my clients in their 30’s find that Facebook is their main form of networking and generating leads for sales opportunities. They use it on a personal level, but it is so integrated with their everyday life that they naturally use it in business as well.

So wake up students – not only do you have to worry about you Facebook Profile when looking for a job, because yes, we will check it – but start getting your network of contacts on it now, because they will come in handy in the future.

An article recently run on eMarketer discusses that retailers who want to connect with their target audience online should go to where their customers already are – social media web sites. According to the “2010 Social Media Report”, 69% of online shoppers regularly use social media web sites, with Facebook being the most popular.

59% of users surveyed regularly use Facebook, and 22% frequent YouTube. MySpace took the 3rd spot with 15% followed by Twitter (11%) and LinkedIn (8%) rounding out the top 5.

More than 1/2 of online shoppers who use social media choose to engage with brands on these sites by becoming their “fan”, “friend” or “follower”. While some social media users interacted with a large number of brands online, most were fans of only a few. Social networking users want to engage, but their time and attention is limited.

The report also found that the top reasons for interacting with brands on social media web sites was to get a good deal and learn about the products. Only a few users were interested in customer support.

Facebook’s New Redesign

Posted By: Stevens & Tate   Category: Social Media

5 Feb 2010

Facebook is celebrating its recent 6th birthday by rolling out a dramatic redesign of its homepage. This new layout places a new emphasis on search and allows Facebook users to sort through much more information without ever leaving the homepage.

What additional changes have taken place?

  • The search bar is now much larger and more prominently placed.
  • Many of the items (like groups and events) that were kept in the Applications Menu have been moved back to the left sidebar on the homepage and rather than taking users to a new page, these now open within the main window where the news feed usually appears.
  • Instant messaging and e-mail-like message inbox have been moved out of the periphery. Not only can users check their inbox from a dropdown menu at the top, they can send messages from there as well.
  • A user’s IM contact list is no longer hidden in a popup menu in the bottom right hand corner of the site; is it now in the left sidebar.

Facebook is currently in the process of rolling these new features. The entire Facebook Community should have access to the new homepage shortly.

Thank you to all that attended our webinar presentations on Social Media. I hope you all found something useful out of the presentation. Some of the key highlights we discussed were:

  • What is Social Media?
  • How Do I begin in the Social Media Realm?

The Social Media world is composed of many different types of websites and networks. Below is a quick re-cap of the main platforms and sites that we discussed during our presentation:

Social Networks (Facebook):
Social Networking websites allow users to build online profiles and share information, both personally and professionally, with others that are part of the network. Facebook is the largest social network on the web with over 350 million users.

Microblogs (Twitter):
Microblogging sites contain short, immediate postings of current thoughts or information. Twitter is the most popular microblogging site and allows users to send friends 140 character messages (similar to a text message sent from a mobile phone). There is an average of 54 million users worldwide who visit Twitter each month.

Photo and Video Sharing (YouTube):
Video is the most popular content on the web. YouTube is the most popular searchable video-sharing site online as well as the 2nd largest search engine today, having more searches than both Yahoo and Bing.

Social Bookmarks (Digg and Delicious):
Social bookmarking is web-based book marking of favorite websites, videos, articles, etc. It allows users to access bookmarks from any computer and to share with others. Delicious is the most popular social bookmarking website today with over 2 million users. Digg currently has over one million users.

The steps put forward on how to begin in social media are:

  1. Develop a plan.
  2. Listen to what others are saying about you and your industry.
  3. Participate in the conversations out there.
  4. Evaluate and work to improve.

If you have any additional questions on social media or if you would like to discuss further how to move forward with a social media plan for you company please feel free to contact Stevens & Tate Marketing or check out the Social Media section on our web site.

Gen Y-ers, those born between the mid 1970s and mid 1990s, have been bombarded with advertising for so long that they have become desensitized to the majority of ads that they cross paths with.

The traditional marketing that homebuilders have used in the past may be lost on these people since they view the world and navigate through it differently than the past generations.

Gen Y-ers have grown up with access to search engines and harnessed the ability to find the information that they need quickly. They are also quick to dismiss a traditional sales pitch.

In order to reach Gen-Yers, you must “hang out” with them more than market to them.

The article, Marketing to Gen Y: The Do’s, Don’ts and Don’t Bothers from the Nation’s Building News web site offers the following tips:

  • Fish Where the Fish Are – If you want to attract a buyer from Gen Y, you must go to where they hang out.
  • Be Easy To Find – A very high percentage of prospective home buyers start their search online, so it is important your site be listed high organically on searches related to your market.
  • Online Social Media – Word of Mouth on Steroids – Participate on social networks and aim to become a trusted local resource and thought leader. In doing so, you’ll gain credibility, followers and business.
  • Harness Viral Marketing – Many of the social networking web sites used by Gen-Yers allow for the possibility to spread a photograph or blog posting to hundreds of thousands of other sites at no additional cost or involvement from the builder.
  • Think Pull, Not Push – Gen-Yers will tune out just about any marketing effort that they perceive as unsolicited or spam.
  • New Outdoor Adverting – If your highway billboards are no longer generating sales traffic, shift those advertising dollars to signage at outdoor venues and events where Gen-Yers in your market hang out.
  • Leverage Your Model Homes – Instead of holding an open house, host monthly events such as a block party or backyard barbeque. Promote these events on social networking web sites.
  • Contests and Raffles – Gen Y buyers enjoy participating in contests and raffles. Partner with complementary companies to add an element of fun and interest to your model home events.
