Can you believe that the one-time villainous mascot for Domino’s Pizza is 25 years old? You may remember that floppy-eared claymation character who would try to get between the hungry customer and their pizza freshly delivered from Domino’s. Domino’s slogan back then was, “Avoid the Noid!” Check out this vintage commercial featuring the Noid at http://www.youtube.com/embed/WXSP1nU5Rwk.
To celebrate the Noid’s 25th birthday, Domino’s Pizza is taking advantage of social media. They are giving away 10,080 gift certificates; one every minute. All you have to do is go to their Facebook page (link to page), Like them, and then play the Noid Shootout game and win. The game itself is very simple. You have to shoot pizzas, while avoiding hitting the Noid. Game play is for a limited time only. It ends on August 15th.
What is interesting is how much Dominos is embracing social media. Their Facebook page shows they have almost 3.5 million Likes. They also use their Twitter page (link) to interact with customers and fans. And have you ever used their web site to place an order? You build your order and can then watch the progress while it is being made. Most Domino’s stores now have computer systems that are connected to the Internet. As an order is placed, it comes up on the order screen. The person(s) working inside make the order and click on the screen to update the progress. If you are watching online, you then see that your order has been placed in the oven. It takes 6 minutes for your item to cook, so after those 6 minutes the online progress is updated to show it is waiting to be delivered. Once the delivery driver leaves with your order, the online progress is again updated letting you know it is on the way.
It is always fun to see Domino’s bringing back their iconic mascot. Domino’s says it retired the Noid because it had improved its name recognition so much that it figured the Noid’s mission was accomplished. He may not be as well-known as Sonny the Cuckoo Bird (I’m cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs!) or the Jolly Green Giant (ho ho ho), but many still today remember those Domino’s commercials in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
Happy 25th Birthday Noid!
