On September 20th, Google opened up membership to everyone. As expected, the amount of traffic surged. Experian Hitwise put together some interesting statistics. Click here to see them.

According to an article in the San Jose Mercury News (article link), Google+ added 2 million members a day. It also mentions that Google+ was the third most popular social site on September 21st; right behind Facebook and Twitter. This has to be good news for those making the decisions at Google.

It does have a ways to go. It doesn’t have the array of apps that Facebook users enjoy every day. Also, it hasn’t opened up for Brands and Businesses. But, to have as many members in just a few months is amazing.

If you haven’t created your account yet and are interested, you can go to the Google+ Site to sign up. Let us know what you think and check back here for more information as we explore what it has to offer as well.

A couple of weeks ago, we had the post about the Return of the Noid. This past week, time.com had an article about the 10 Creepiest Product Mascots. This was mainly brought about due to Burger King announcing it is retiring the King character (USA Today Article). Here is their list:

1. Burger King’s King

Remember those commercials where the King would be in your bed when you woke up? Those were creepy.
2. Quiznos’ Spongmonkeys
Who actually wanted to eat their subs after seeing these things? They looked like dead rodent corpses with animated eyes, arms and mouths.

I was watching Castle the other day and two commercials followed each other back to back. They were so similar in style that I thought they were the same product. Unfortunately that just meant that both agencies who created these commercials were just lazy.

The first was a Virgin Mobile Sparah ad. At first I thought it was a little cute, but quickly I found it just plain insulting. Another commercial spoofing realty tv, and not even a new show but something old and overdone already. Can’t we think of anything new?

And then Hanes came on with a spoof on morning television. Really? It’s Hanes! You have so much to work with and that’s all you can give me? From Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan to this? Depressing.

What is the demo of Castle viewers anyway that I would get such STUPID commercials directed at me? I personally am a fan of Castle and I do not consider myself that dumb. Was this bad creative directing or a bad media buy? You decide.

HousingZone reported this week that homebuilders who have weathered the recession are now predicting better days ahead for buyers, sellers and the homebuilding industry.

During a recent conference that was attended by representatives of large, national homebuilding companies active in the Chicagoland market, as well as independent and custom builders, all were optimistic about 2010. Several are introducing new floor plans and new home communities.

“The signs are positive, with low interest rates, lower home prices and tax credits,” said Andrew B. Konovodoff, president of Town & Country Homes. “Consumer confidence is growing and unemployment is starting to turn around. A buyer purchasing a $200,000 home today with an FHA mortgage of 3 ½ percent down and a tax credit will have a monthly payment of about $1,200, an affordable number for many first-time buyers. The coming year will definitely be better, and the builders who remain in the marketplace are focused on customer satisfaction to a greater degree than every before.”

Builders cited the extended first-time homebuyer credit and the new repeat buyer tax credit as important stimulants for the 2010 market. In addition, low interest rates and pent-up buyer demand will drive an increase in activity.

Content is king. Content is everything on the social web – tweets, status updates, ad units, search, billboards, press releases, copy on corporate websites and blogs, etc. But succeeding in internet marketing requires much more than just content!

It’s about the right content, at the right time, to the right person in the right channel – relevant content. Relevant content:

  • adds value to the conversation
  • positions your brand as a trusted source of information
  • is authentic and believable
  • builds trust with the community
  • happens as a result of listening and acting
  • increases the reach of your messages
  • increases your organic search rankings
  • drives purchase intent

When a brand can achieve this, they will not only deepen community engagement, but they will create customer advocacy. Through real time analytics, it’s very easy to identify what content (messages) clearly resonate with the community. This is one reason why Social CRM is such a hot topic right now.

Foursquare has added two heavily requested features to its popular app that will make the service significantly more social: photos and comments.

These new features allow users to attach photos to check-ins, tips and venues, and add comments to the check-ins of their friends. These social updates will also get enmeshed within the rest of a user’s Foursquare activity and included on his or her history page.

With the new photos feature, Foursquare users will be prompted to add one as they check-in, in much of the same manner that they are already prompted to add a “shout” with each check-in. Users can then continue to add photos after they check-in that will be added to the check-in detail page – where comment activity happens.

The new photos and comments features will stay mostly contained to a user’s immediate circle of friends. Photos associated with check-ins will only be visible to a user’s Foursquare friends and the other social networks that he or she shares them with. Comments, however, will only be viewable by a user’s Foursquare friends.
