Sure, having a website for your business serves a practical need: to draw net-surfing users to your product or service. However, it’s also much more than slapping on a run of the mill two-column template and calling it a day. Nothing kills an online buzz like a poorly designed or drastically outdated website. Dry and boring default templates, broken assets, confusing pages and invasive widgets do nothing but harm a page’s style, which in turn reflects poorly on the company.

2012 is heralding a new wave of innovative web technologies and design, and a page that stays in step with these trends is bound to pique interest and lower your bounce rate. Even more, a well done and on-trend website remains effective well after the year is over, reeling users in with thoughtful design and building a design-conscious and taste-making reputation. Keep these tips in mind when you clean up your company’s website, and stay ahead of the curve for the new year.

1. Don’t Be Afraid to be Bold

Some people do SEO (Search Engine Optimization) article writing while others write articles to appeal to their readers. The trick is to combine the two and write articles that are keyword focused but that still make sense and appeal to human readers. In order to achieve this balance, use these 5 very simple SEO article writing tips that any beginner can execute, and you’ll be writing articles that your readers (and Google!) will love.

Step #1: Research one keyword phrase to target in your article.
This will be a long-tail keyword phrase. A long-tail phrase is usually 3 to 8 words long. There is not a lot of competition for this phrase, so it will be relatively easy for your article to rank highly in the search engine rankings.

Step #2: Create an interesting title that uses this phrase.
Any time you use keywords in a title or article, they must be placed in appropriate context and sound natural. So, your title should sound natural and be grammatically correct. It should also be appealing to human readers.

Try to think of phrasing that a person might type into Google and craft your title after that.

For example, many people type ‘how to do xyz’ in the search box, so you could turn your title into a “how to”. Also, many times people type a question into Google, so you might try forming your title into a question.

Step #3: Write an article that is useful to your readers.
Keep your eyes on the prize for now–your goal is to write valuable content that your readers will love. Forget about your keywords just now–just write an educational article.

The ultimate thing that makes your article valuable in Google’s eye and your reader’s eyes is the helpfulness of the content. Keywords do not mean anything if the article does not contain information that readers can use.

The article content must deliver on what the title promised. For example, if your title is “How to Teach Your Baby to Read in 5 Steps”, then the article must present 5 steps that can be used in teaching a baby to read.

Step #4: Focus on creating timeless content.
Write an article that has relevance beyond this month and this year. If your article topic is evergreen, then people will be searching for information on that topic for years to come.

Step #5: Develop a list of phrases that are variations of your original keyword phrase.
For example, if the phrase you are targeting is “buying a puppy”, semantically related variations of that phrase would be:

  • buy a puppy
  • buying puppies
  • where to buy puppies
  • where to buy a puppy
  • how to buy a puppy

Google recognizes related variations of phrases, so it is not necessary or desirable to repeat the same phrase throughout your article.

Take your list of semantically related phrase variations and choose a few to put in your article in a natural sounding way. You don’t want to force a phrase in the article–it should fit naturally in the context of your content and be grammatically correct.

In order to learn how to increase search engine rankings and drive website traffic you need to understand the concepts that govern the way the search engines work.

Without an understanding of these principles and a system to incorporate them into everything you do online, you will not get the success you are seeking.

On the other hand, learn how to effectively utilize them and you will start dominating niches all over the Internet driving thousands of visitors to your site on a daily basis.

So what are the principles that rule search engine rankings and how do you improve organic rankings? The three principles are:

1. Relevancy
2. Popularity
3. Originality

Relevancy

Relevancy is something defined as having relationship to. For example if your website was about golf, related content would include information about such things as golf clubs, golf courses and golf lessons.

Content about anything other than the topic of the website or related topics would not score for relevancy, thereby having no chance of ranking in the search engines. Search engines check your site for relevancy.

You need to be right on topic for whatever it is you are targeting with the content you create. A final word of caution about relevancy: Relevancy alone will not rank your site. You could have the most highly relevant, best original content ever written posted at your site, however if there are no sites pointing to it, it will never rank in the search engines. Relevancy does not work without the concepts of popularity and original content.

The first step is to choose the keyword or keyword phrase you want your content to target. Let’s say you’re trying to get a higher ranking for the keyword phrase, “Improve Search Engine Ranking”. First, you would want to find what people are searching for and specifically target that keyword if you want your content to rank for that phrase.

Make sure you include the keyword phrase in the title of the article. For example, your title could be “Strategies To Improve Search Engine Ranking”. Always try to put the keyword or keyword phrase as the first few words of the article title. Always remember to use the keyword phrase, several times throughout the article. Finally make sure your content remains 100% relevant to the keyword phrase.

Popularity

Popularity works together with relevancy to improve search engine rankings. Popularity is based on two key measures:

1. How Many Sites Link to Your Site

A site’s popularity is measured first by the number of sites that directly link to your site.

To demonstrate popularity let’s take a quick look at YouTube. YouTube is one of the most popular sites on the Internet, Why? All links and embed codes taken from YouTube and embedded on other sites, whether on Facebook, Myspace, a blog, a sales page or a website, create automatic links back to YouTube where the video is hosted. Every time someone shares a YouTube video a link is created.

With the number of videos shared, Youtube gets thousands of new incoming links daily. This is one of the reasons why YouTube videos rank very highly on the search engines. Their site is super popular.

2. The Popularity of the Sites Linking to You

The more popular the site linking to you is, the better the score given by the search engines.

The more incoming links to your site the more popular it is. It is therefore always important to syndicate the content of your site (with a direct link to the content on your site), to as many sites as possible. The Internet presents a host of sites where you can post your content for free to increase your search engine rankings, including popular high ranking sites like article directories, blogs, social bookmarking sites, video
sites, press release and social network pages.

Originality

Originality basically refers to unique content. In simple terms the search engines ask the question, is this same piece of content all over the Internet? As an example, if I took a highly relevant and popular article from my site and posted it to hundreds of sites it would not rank high in the search engines as it would no longer be deemed unique.

There is no doubt that spreading your unique content across the Internet is important for driving traffic to your site. The secret is to make several unique versions of the same information all with a backlink to your original article posted on your site. Spinning is a popular term used to describe the process of changing the titles, key words and phrases throughout your article to make several unique versions. Placing these all
over the Internet with a back link to your site will improve rankings.

You must get your web site’s search engine optimization right, mainly because proper SEO will increase your chances of obtaining those all important top rankings in the search engines. Besides, a well optimized site or page, will go a long way in weathering any abrupt changes on the web.

Below are some tips when it comes to proper search engine optimization techniques:

1. Place your main keyword phrase in your Domain Name. Over time you will see higher rankings for that phrase and keywords related to it. With Google going to Instant Search, it is believed that you will see these keyworded domains playing a much greater role in what is listed first. You still have to get those quality back-links, but having a good keyworded domain will be half your battle.

2. Place your keyword phrase in the URL for your webpage.
Place it in the title, description and in the H1 tags on your page. Also place this keyword phrase and variations of it throughout your page, including at the very bottom. As for keyword density, try to keep it under 6%, this is the limit that Ezinearticles puts on their contributed content, go above this percentage and they won’t take it.

3. Place related keyworded interior links on your page.
That is, keep all your content and links keyword-related to one another. This makes it easy for the search engines to index your pages and content.

4. Make sure you have an XML Sitemap which the search engines can use to quickly index your new pages. This is not only for the search engines but to help your visitors more easily navigate your site; never leave a visitor stranded.

5. Make sure all your pages load quickly. Reduce any large images that you have and break content/articles up into different pages to reduce load times.

6. Make sure your site handles 404 mistakes and your visitors are directed to your sitemap or another page on your site.
If you don’t know how to correct this problem, just do a Google search for “how to set up a custom 404 file not found page” or contact your web host support to fix this issue.

7. Don’t have duplicate content on your site. Do a proper 301 redirect for the www and non-www versions of your site, since this may fool some of the search engines into believing you have two versions of your site, one with www and one without the www in the URL. For Apache servers  simply place this bit of code in the .htaccess file on your server.

8. Link out to other high quality keyword related sites. Linking out to high quality sites have helped sites’ search engine rankings. Search engines, especially Google, want to see you’re connected to quality content and besides, pleasing your visitor is what it’s really all about.

9. Keep all your interior site navigation as simple as possible. Make it extremely easy for your visitors to find their way around your site. I usually don’t have any pages more than three clicks away from my homepage. All main categories or sub-categories of my site are not only listed on my home/index page but also on every page of my site. Again, never leave your visitors or the search engines stranded.

10. Place YouTube videos on content pages. Sure you will lose some visitors to YouTube, but it also connects your content with this very popular site which is owned by Google. We all know Google says it doesn’t promote its own interests, but what publicly traded company doesn’t? Completely inter-connecting all your pages and content with the countless Google programs will ensure your content won’t be missed.

Google has launched some improvements to its borders for over 60 countries and regions in Google Maps (coming to Google Earth soon).

“Making Google’s mapping tools as accurate as possible is a complex process, especially when a map’s accuracy has both quantitative and qualitative aspects,” says Google Geo Policy Analyst Charlie Hale. “We receive spatial data of all kinds – imagery, boundaries, place names, etc. – from a variety of sources worldwide, and we review them carefully before integrating them into the best representation of a given location in Google Earth and Maps.”

“In the case of geopolitical features on our maps, the depiction of borders is something upon which local authorities, governments and internationally recognized bodies often disagree,” says Hale. “Our goal is to provide the most legible and accurate maps we can given the information available in these oft-changing areas of geopolitical disagreement. Like most maps, ours include symbology that makes borders and other geopolitical features clearer to users.”

With the update, Google says many borders will more closely follow natural boundaries like mountains and rivers. In some areas Google has changed the symbology of the boundary lines based on political treaties and agreements. In other areas, there is simply just more information provided.

Recently, Site Reference published an article that discusses SEO tips to achieve double rankings in the search results because, simply put, two results are better than one.

87% of search engine traffic for a given keyword is allocated from occupying the #1 position in the search engine results page.

SEO is predicated on one simple premise, rankings. In order for SEO to be effective, it must produce ranking on the first page in search engines. Not only is this the crowning achievement of search engine optimization, but once you achieve a top 10 position, then you can pull other keywords into the spotlight as a result of strategic linking.

Search engine algorithms pay particular attention to individual pages capable of offsetting all of the other inconsistencies of competitor’s web pages and deem one page worthy above all others for any given search term.
Obviously the metrics are unique for each market, keyword or niche, but the reality is the same, once a top 3 or more importantly #1 or #1, 2 and 3 positions represent in Google.

It does not matter if that link is provided from your own website or another website, rankings are by the page and there is a daisy-chain effect of linking pages together that fuses the pages through a dynamic give and take relationship (based on citation). This citation can provide the algorithmic equivalents of trust needed for the newly linked page to jump in line past others duking it out for that keyword.

Depending on the competitiveness of the keyword or key phrase and the thresholds inherent to the barrier to entry; the time required to initiate a campaign, create all of the necessary content, inbound links and citation from other web 2.0 properties, RSS feeds and social bookmarking sites divided by the amount of time you invest managing or outsourcing the various components involved determine your profitability and return on investment.

With this in mind, from a tactical perspective, it’s better to leverage the SERP positioning you already have, than look outside of your own website for off page ranking factor. If you understand the power of a #1 position, then you can replicate this next simple SEO tip.

1. Identify all current #1 positions in Google for keywords.
2. Validate they still exist.
3. Use Keyword Research to find “related keywords” based on the #1 ranking
4. Link from the page that ranks to a new page (using similar anchor text or overlapping keywords to promote the new page).
5. Let the new page get indexed, then check the SERPs
