Those 140-character messages reach an affluent and engaged audience

Josh Bernoff needed to replace the car adapter for his Garmin GPS navigation system last summer. And, because he was headed out of town the next day, he needed the device immediately.

Seeking help finding an adapter that would work with his device, he turned to Best Buy’s Twelpforce, a customer service program that enables consumers to ask Best Buy employees questions via Twitter. “Where can I get a replacement car adapter for a Garmin in a hurry? Do you have them at the stores?” he tweeted.

Nine minutes later a Best Buy sales operator in Mansfield, Texas, replied that there were two possible replacements available online, which should also be available in stock at his local store in Burlington, Mass. Rather than assume they would be there when he arrived, she gave Bernoff the Burlington store’s number to call to ensure that the car adapter was in stock. It was, and when he drove to the store to pick up the adapter he also bought an iPad that he had been eyeing for some time, along with other merchandise. The total sale came to more than $1,100 beyond the car adapter. Read the rest of this entry »

On September 20th, Google opened up membership to everyone. As expected, the amount of traffic surged. Experian Hitwise put together some interesting statistics. Click here to see them.

According to an article in the San Jose Mercury News (article link), Google+ added 2 million members a day. It also mentions that Google+ was the third most popular social site on September 21st; right behind Facebook and Twitter. This has to be good news for those making the decisions at Google.

It does have a ways to go. It doesn’t have the array of apps that Facebook users enjoy every day. Also, it hasn’t opened up for Brands and Businesses. But, to have as many members in just a few months is amazing.

If you haven’t created your account yet and are interested, you can go to the Google+ Site to sign up. Let us know what you think and check back here for more information as we explore what it has to offer as well.

Businesses rely on Facebook to increase brand awareness, build community and strengthen customer service (for starters).
But how can companies effectively leverage Facebook to amplify new product launches?

1. Build a Targeted Audience
To ensure that time spent online is time well spent, businesses must focus on building and cultivating a targeted audience. Start by defining your audience and developing a strategy to attract that demographic to the Facebook Page. A content strategy, social giveaways and Facebook ads can help companies reach the right people.
As sneakpeeq co-founder and president Henry Kim says, “We learned that if you get the right audience to share your product in the beginning — and getting this audience excited about your company is a giant step — you can do this with little money. Be creative. Where else can you get an instant audience for your company?”
A growing Facebook community is also an evolving community. Sheri Wallace, who works with Dandelion, seller of eco-friendly baby products, notes: “The community at 10,000 fans is not the same as it was at 2,000.” She adds that keeping in touch with the parents has been crucial to increased growth and to the success of newly launched products. Can you believe that the one-time villainous mascot for Domino’s Pizza is 25 years old? You may remember that floppy-eared claymation character who would try to get between the hungry customer and their pizza freshly delivered from Domino’s. Domino’s slogan back then was, “Avoid the Noid!” Check out this vintage commercial featuring the Noid at http://www.youtube.com/embed/WXSP1nU5Rwk.

To celebrate the Noid’s 25th birthday, Domino’s Pizza is taking advantage of social media. They are giving away 10,080 gift certificates; one every minute. All you have to do is go to their Facebook page (link to page), Like them, and then play the Noid Shootout game and win. The game itself is very simple. You have to shoot pizzas, while avoiding hitting the Noid. Game play is for a limited time only. It ends on August 15th. Read the rest of this entry »

Parents are still relying on coupons, comparison shopping and store brands to save money

It’s the time of year when parents are beginning to look forward to the first day of school—and preparing with the necessary back-to-school shopping. For retailers, back-to-school is not only a timely business opportunity, it’s an important bellwether of holiday spending prospects, too.

2011 back-to-school spending is holding steady from the previous year. According to the National Retail Federation, combined spending for kindergarten through college will be $68.8 billion this year, a figure second only to end-of-year holiday sales. Read the rest of this entry »

Since it opened up in late June, Google+ has already signed up 25 million users. At this growth rate, it is on target to pass Twitter with adult users online (link to article). What does this mean to the business owners?

Currently, Google+ is controlling the growth rate of new users. Some of the features are looking promising. The Circles feature is one. With this feature, you can organize your friends into circles. Then when you make a post, you can select which circle of friends you want to read that post. At this point, Google+ is not open for business pages, but when it does a business could have a circle for clients or even a circle for customers. This will allow the businesses to make posts and directly target those they want. Read the rest of this entry »

If your company doesn’t have a Twitter account, you are probably missing out on getting new customers. Already a strong brand management device, Twitter can also be used to generate leads for your business. Once you’ve located a target audience, it is simply a matter of following tweets that they send out and then getting them to follow you and your business.

After that, you have the potential to get your message out to the people they are following and you can spread your influence even further. Of course, you need to make sure that people are going to be interested in your tweets. Don’t just tweet any old rubbish and always remember you can’t take them back — don’t tweet rashly! Tweet interesting information.

A list of companies was done that shows the top 9 Tweeters.

The list:

1 – @Google (3,012,238 followers)
2 – @WholeFoods (1,916,179 followers)
3 – @Dell, @DellCares, @Direct2Dell (and many more) (1,584,837 followers)
4 – @SouthwestAir (1,107,156 followers)
5 – @CocaCola (254,618 followers)
6 – @Delta, @DeltaAssist (180,000 followers)
7 – @Target (126,563 followers)
8 – @AmericanExpress (120,343 followers)
9 – @McDonalds (120,277 followers)

Let’s take a look at the last entry on the list. McDonalds has a 10-person Twitter Team. One of the recent tweets done was “After being part of a meeting re: McDonald’s Frozen Strawberry Lemonade, now I’m craving one! I’ll be back! Have you had one yet? ^MO” (if you haven’t tried one yet, these are good). I’m sure more than a few of those 120,000+ followers went out and got a Frozen Strawberry Lemonade sometime that day thanks to this tweet. This makes an easy way for them to pass information on to people who already like them.

Another great way to tie your Twitter account to your web site is to add one of the Twitter widgets. This will display your tweets on your site and potentially get even more followers. Also, make sure you link to your Twitter account in any emails being sent by your company. If your company needs help getting things set up, please let us know.
